White Water Rafting
and Kayaking

Lou and Victor in swimmers position

Lou has been white water rafting many times with Environmental Travelling Companions (ETC) since 2004. He introduced Victor to rafting in 2005. In 2006, while rafting on the Yampa River, Lou got the chance to kayak. Later he tried his hand at Sea Kayaking on San Francisco Bay. In 2007, Lou and Victor rafted the Klamath River through 24 wildfires. (You've gotta see these pictures!) And, since 2007, Lou and Victor have hosted their own annual rafting extravaganza as a benefit event for ETC... (For all the details of the upcoming event as well as pictures from previous events, click on the "The River with Lou and Victor" link.)

*** American River ***

In 2011, Victor and Lou cancelled their own August rafting trip, "The River with Lou and Victor", but could not avoid the river... They rafted twice in the Summer, participating in ETC's individual trips with friends, once in July and again in September. Click here for the pictures from their 2011 rafting trips!

Victor and Lou were part of Hep Nada's group adventure on the South Fork of the American River on July 2-4, 2007. (New pictures added on June 7, 2008.)

*** Klamath River ***

Victor and Lou were going to be part of ETC's expedition on the Klamath River on July 14-16, 2007. We left home on July 12 and spent the night in Redding. While there, we got some great pictures of Turtle Bay and the Sun Dial Bridge.

On Friday, July 13, we drove the rest of the way to the town of Happy Camp on the Klamath River where we were to put in the next day... Only to find out that the day before there was an dry electrical storm and there were 24 wild fires burning throughout the area. Helicopters were picking water out of the river right at our camp!

So, what did we do on the 14th? We went rafting! And what a great experience it was... The water... The trees... The wild life... Even the fires... (Wow!!)

We saw the fires on the first 2 days... And, it was the second day that we found ourselves at the biggest rapid of the trip, Dragon Tooth... and and, it was here that the fire (or, as we called it, the "Dragon's Breath") nearly touched the water. After we successfully navigated through and past the challenges placed before us, we looked back to take a final look at our conquest... And, that was the last time we actually saw the fire while we were on the river. (Wow!!)

After our final circle, Victor and Lou decided to see a play at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland... Only to find out that they are "dark" on Mondays... Then our car broke down. Everyone was so nice, though... Got the car fixed, ate some really delicious food, and decided to stay and see a play on Tuesday.

On our way home on Wednesday, we drove through the town of Maxwell. It is here where Victor's friend, Mary, will be pastor of her first church... So, we got some pictures...

All in all, a terrific trip! Thank you ETC for a great experience!

*** Yampa and Green Rivers ***

Victor and Lou joined ETC's expedition to the Yampa and Green Rivers through Dinosaur National Monument on June 27 - July 3, 2006. We never thought we could camp ANYWHERE for 5 nights, let alone having to set up camp in a different location every night... But the experience was simply amazing and we would like to do it again... (We realized that no remote control is needed when we have each other under the stars.)

*** Sea Kayaking ***

Lou tried his hand at Sea Kayaking for the very first time in 2006 at the Regatta/Paddle-A-Thon, a fund raising event for Environmental TRaveling Companions. Thanks to the terrific skill of his guide, Lou took 1st Place in his age division (seniors) for the short course and had the second fastest time overall for all divisions, beaten only by a mere child by a few seconds!
