What is "The River with Lou and Victor?"

Every Summer, we invite our friends (and their friends) to join us for our annual white water rafting trip. It is a chance for everyone to enjoy the outdoors and each other's company... And, maybe a chance to explore personal boundaries, too.

We are at the River Camp for 2 nights and on the river 2 days. The first night we set up camp and have a chance to get acquainted over a meal prepared in the fully equipped outdoor kitchen. In the morning, we learn about getting "river ready" and have our safety talk. We put-in at camp for the journey down the Lower South Fork in the afternoon, starting out slow with class 1 and 2 rapids, and ending the day with several class 3 rapids. After getting bused back to our camp, we have a chance to relax and eat before the big event of our time together, The No-Talent Talent Show!

The next morning we get an early start being bused to the put-in spot for the Upper South Fork. Unlike the first day which started off slowly with the smaller rapids, day 2 starts off with a bang with class 3 and 3+ rapids... We break for lunch at Sutter's Mill, then it is a gentle paddle and playtime back to camp: Try to catch the swinging rope from the bridge, try your hand at guiding the raft or maybe jump in the 1 or 2 person kayak.

Each year we have a different theme for the trip... This might help you when thinking about the No-Talent Talent Show... Maybe not. The theme is only a suggestion; you can do anything you wish for your "talent:" Teach us something (how do you fold a fitted sheet?), amaze us (recite pi to 100 digits), tell a joke or a story, sing or lipsync a song, dress as your favorite artist, etc.

Why do we host this event?

Lou was introduced to Environmental Traveling Companions (ETC) and white water rafting while on Interferon treatment for hepatitis C back in 2004. It was an incredible life-changing experience and for those in the group that went. Victor was introduced to the activity in 2005 and we have both been many times on many rivers with ETC. We have seen how the experience can change lives. And, we have met some truly amazing people. We like to share this experience with our friends, not only for the enjoyment, but to introduce people to ETC and the work they do.

In fact, we do this trip as a fundraiser for ETC; part of the money we collect goes into a scholarship fund which allows ETC to continue to take individuals who believe they cannot do extreme sports, not only white water rafting, but also sea kayaking and cross country skiing. ETC also has an ambitious Youth Leadership group which takes students of all abilities and cultural backgrounds and introduces them to the outdoors... Many of the river guides actually started here years ago and continue with ETC today.

So, when do we do this thing?

We generally go the first full weekend in August... Keep watching this site for the most current info!
